Use of terraballistic or earth penetrating projectiles for soil studies is described; developed by Sandia Corp, projectile can be used for making fast preliminary studies of remote or inaccessible sites; technique involves dropping or propelling instrumented earth-penetrator from aircraft flying over study site; projectile, which is designed to penetrate efficiently deep into soil, carries instruments and on-board transmitting (telemetry) systems that radio back to airplane soil resistance forces felt as penetrator slows to rest, in few tens of msec, deep below ground surface.
