Propeller chart analysis has been substantiated by full-scale trials on existing vessels, in both free-running and towing conditions; from these trials wake fractions and thrust deduction factors were obtained; over range of propeller diameters considered there is continuous economic improvement as diameter increases; use of propellers of maximum size would achieve net annual saving, taking account of capital depreciation, between 10% and 15% of annual fuel costs, etc; it is suggested significance of study is that improvement has been expressed in economic terms, leading to design recommendations.
