Discussion of problems of noise and vibration due to propeller, propulsion machinery, and associated auxiliaries on commercial merchant ships; human sensitivity to noise and vibration is reviewed and some discussion concerning relative positions of design agent, shipbuilder, and shipowner is presented; results of shipboard noise and vibration surveys conducted by Maritime Administration are presented together with proposed acceptable limits of noise and vibration.
