Possible failure of propellers, shafting or other system components, icebreaking process is described and methods for calculating load torques are developed; speed of advance of ship through ice field is chosen as performance index and is used to derive performance requirements; introduction is given to methods which utilize steady state, quasisteady state and dynamic techniques for synthesizing propulsion system which meets given performance requirements; examples refer to d-c diesel electric installation; mathematical model for deriving propeller ice loading is given.
