New design of hatch cover for oil/ bulk/ore carriers has been introduced by ASCA and installed initially aboard 107,000-ton dw Flowergate, built by Gotaverken for Turnbull, Scott Shipping Co of London; hatches on new ship each comprise undivided panel measuring 10.5×15 m which when opened is rolled to unshipped position at port side of vessel; with new sealing principle, when hatch cover is closed it is not lowered on to coaming; instead, internally arranged, spring-loaded gasket frame is forced against matching edge of coaming.
