Fresh assessment is made of difficulties connected with, and benefits to be obtained from automatic regulation of combustion, water level, and superheat, over range of steaming conditions including maneuvering; assessment is made in view of progress in development of fuel oil burners with wide-range characteristics, and different types are considered; choice of control media, whether mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, or hydraulic, is discussed; metering devices are also considered.
