Study undertaken to find basis for design of automotive components which would provide for inherent scatter in their lives; log normal distribution was used to analyze scatter data; for design purposes some problems are best solved in terms of life at given stress and others in terms of stress at given life; tabulation of design factors for automobile, truck and tractor parts; at any required level of reliability design life as fraction of mean life can be determined; average life of components, conventionally obtained from laboratory tests, can be translated into more meaningful design life where reliability and maximum percent of failure can be stated.
