In designing automobile clutch it is essential to know how to determine value of maximum surface temperature during engagement of known duty, and most severe duty clutch is likely to encounter in service; maximum temperature of facing is calculated for 2 sets of conditions; in first case, clutch is let in suddenly when engine is running at maximum rpm and vehicle is stationary (representative of bad driving); in second case, vehicle is held stationary on steep hill by slipping clutch; calculations are made for clutches of small saloon car and of high powered heavy saloon car; examples.
