Runways are divided into precision approach runways, served by Instrument Landing System (ILS) or Ground Controlled Approach (GCA); Navaid runways served by some form of navigational aid such as Non Directional Beacon (NDB); and visual runways not served by any form of radio aid; reference made to VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator), developed by RAE; effect on operational safety of installing high intensity aids is shown; factors to consider in selection of suitable light source; design of approach light, circuit guidance, and approach beacon systems.
