VTOL configurations are divided into single engine, centrally grouped lift engines, and distributed lift engines; precise control of flight is needed because of small landing areas and complex control required for and transition to wingborne flight; general requirement for artificial stability augmentation of VTOL aircraft supported by relatively concentrated flow of lifting air; attitude, height and speed control; details of flight director which provides all data requiring prompt response by pilot; data are presented by means of flight-path ball, which moves relative to horizon line in response to angle of descent.
