Promising applications for aircraft capable of hypersonic speeds, i.e., Mach 5 plus, can be divided into boost and cruise applications, although boost type aircraft could have long range capability by orbiting to its destination; typical flight corridors are shown for cruise and boost applications, plotted as flight altitude vs flight Mach number; integrated vehicle design considerations; possible air-breathing engines for hypersonic propulsion include precooled turbojet with reheat, turbo-rocket, liquid air cycle engines, and ramjet; problem of mixing fuel and air sufficiently quickly.
