Military transport conceived to meet specification issued to several aircraft companies in 1951 by U S A F Tactical Air Command; new high strength aluminum alloy, A785-T, used extensively, particularly in plate form; designed to accommodate cargo volume of 4300 cu ft, fuselage contains compartment 41.5 ft long, over 9 ft high and 10.3 ft wide; powered by four Allison T56-A-1 single shaft turboprops, each developing 3750 ehp at takeoff.
