On Jan 17 1964, four years after U S Navy bathyscaph Trieste descended 35,800 ft into Marianas Trench, Trieste II, greatly improved bathyscaph was launched at U S Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego; instrumentation and operation of these vessels are compared; for Trieste II, maximum operating depth is also 36,000 ft, cabin ID is 6.5 ft, length 67 ft, beam 15 ft, dry weight including sphere 46 short tons, payload at design depth 8 tons, shot ballast capacity 26 tons, draft 12.5 ft; propulsion system is based on three 115 v d-c, high speed (4000 rpm) motors with in-line reduction gearing.
