Designed for long range reconnaissance, patrol and bombing duties, Short Sunderland is flying boat of high wing cantilever monoplane type; construction based on that of C-class Empire boats; four Bristol Pegasus XXII engines, mounted in nacelles of monocoque construction, drive three-bladed, two-position de Havilland airscrews; engine has rating of 810/850 hp at 4000 ft.
