Petroleum refiner has problem of producing gasolines on mass production basis which will be satisfactory in many types of engines operated under widely different driving conditions: refiner's solution to this problem reviewed from viewpoint of transportation and maintenance engineer; trends of major characteristics of gasoline, namely, volatility, anti-knock quality, sulphur content, gum content, and chemical composition discussed.
