Determination of misalignment between two inertial systems is problem dealing with random variables; initial misalignment angles are random variables, as are inertial instrument inaccuracies; if figure of quality is to be assigned to indicated misalignment, statistical techniques must be used; optimum linear filter developed by R.E. Kalman is applied; given linear expressions for propagation of misalignment angles and for measurement process, technique produces maximum-likelihood, real-time estimate of desired quantities; use of indicated downward velocities and inclusion of vertical maneuver during estimation process are investigated to improve accuracy of level misalignment estimates.
