Procedure is developed for construction of wings that have least wave drag for given lift; solutions are exact within hypersonic small-disturbance theory, for limiting case of infinite Mach number; complete solution for given lift yields minimum drag, optimum angle of attack, and shape of wing; by considering families of such wings optimum problem is considered, namely, to find wing with given lift which produces minimum wave resistance; optimum problem is solved by variational methods; numerical results are obtained for range of n from 1/2 to 10, with γ equal 1.4.
