Paper determines general structure of free-molecule flowfield past finite cone at zero yaw showing results that can be obtained; problem is formulated in terms of diffuse emission of particles from surface; in principle, more complex gas-surface interactions can be assumed; main feature in determining flowfield is description of distribution function over velocity space, and this reduces to geometric problem; number density field is found, and also some of other moments which can be obtained in explicit form; difficulties in obtaining flowfield are illustrated; pertinence to flight problems in upper atmosphere.
