Tiros 1, designed to observe cloud cover over earth by television techniques, was launched on Apr 1 1960 by Thor-Able rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla, into near-circular orbit with apogee of 465.9 statute mi and inclination of 48.36° to equator; satellite traversed 1302 orbits before end of its 3-mo functional life, and returned slightly fewer than 23,000 pictures, over 60% having high meteorological information content; background, design and development of system; results obtained.
