System for air launching high altitude research probes and small orbital payloads is under test at Naval Ordnance Test Station (NOTS). China Lake, Calif; 2-stage Caleb rocket carrying scientific payload to altitude of 630 nautical mi, was carried aloft by McDonnell F4H Phantom fighter and launched over Pacific July 25 1962; Caleb is actually 4-stage vehicle using NOTS 500 solid propellant first stage, ABL 248 second stage. Model 400-TG NOTS spherical motor third stage, and NOTS Model 300 spherical motor fourth stage; launch details and ignition information.
