Difficulty in using conventional instruments lies in fact that information about fuselage attitude is insufficient to fly helicopter since it does not identify flight path; use of mechanical devices and new instruments, such as flight director and automatic pilot Flight Control System Mark 3, designed to give stability in pitch, roll and yaw, with height control through collective pitch, and to complete automatic transition from specific cruising conditions to hover at predetermined height over sea; research in developing automatic approach system for helicopters, carried out in conjunction with Blind Landing Experimental Unit, RAE, Bedford.
