Objectives and development of synchronous-orbit telecommunications satellite providing over 240 two-way voice channels or two-way television transmission between United States and Europe 24 hr/day; Early Bird is spin-stabilized, with two hydrogen peroxide systems for attitude and velocity control, solar-cell panels for electrical power, apogee motor to accelerate it into nearly circular orbit, command and telemetry system, and microwave repeater; characteristics of communication system -- two 25 mc IF receivers; 240 duplex voice channels with two-carrier operation; redundant 6-w T WT (traveling-wave-tube) transmitters; antenna gain of 9 db in transmitting, 4 db in receiving.
