Analysis of grain ignition and flame spreading in rocket engines was made to calculate chamber pressure as function of time during this phase; initial conditions include instantaneous gasless ignition of section of upstream end of grain, uniform pressure and temperature in gas, uniformly distributed temperature in unignited portion of grain, and axially varying gas velocity distribution; quasi-analytic solution for chamber pressure is coupled to finite difference solution for grain temperature; after end of flame spreading, pressure calculation alone is continued until steady-state conditions are approximated.
