Test vehicles are used in free flight to test components, structures, aerodynamics, servo controls, guidance systems and propulsion; two early test vehicles were CTV.1 and RTV.1; first was used for aerodynamic investigation and development of free flight instrumentation; RTV.1 was larger vehicle used on beam riding guidance research; CTV series culminated in CTV.5; CTV.5 Series 1 was designed for aerodynamic measurements on coasting dart at high incidences and high altitude; CTV.5 Series 2 was designed for kinetic heating investigations while CTV.5 Series 3 was upper atmosphere sounding rocket; development of latest test vehicle, Black Knight.
