Several systems of temporary, reusable steel roadways employed in street and highway reconstruction work are described, from world's first demountable 262 yd long elevated road in Birmingham, England, to mobile and collapsible portal structure recently designed by Krupp, West Germany; steel plank roadway is most significant practical development for highway traffic, whereas elevated steel roadway structures are most acceptable for dealing with roadwork in town centers.
