Study is based on particulars of world losses of merchant ships consequent upon casualty compiled by Lloyd's Register since end of last century; records embrace all ships over 100 tons gross of every type and construction; present object was to ascertain incidence of these losses as applied to ordinary steel merchant ship engaged in normal peacetime seagoing trading, and for this purpose other types were eliminated; casualties are examined in 5-yr periods under four main headings of losses by fire, collision losses, ships wrecked (stranding, striking rocks, etc), and ships reported abandoned, foundered or missing.
