Naval ship design from first statement of operator's requirements to final production of builder's plans is presented, with reference to both surface vessels and submarines, and with emphasis on feasibility or conceptual design; iterative nature of conceptual design is emphasized, and rational process for arriving at principal characteristics shown; development of specific design is illustrated by selected sketches and plans of AGOR-3 class of oceanographic research ships at various design stages.
