History of development of large, two-cycle, turbocharged marine diesel engines is outlined; different types are described, and advantages of uniflow scavenging and constant-pressure turbocharging are considered; next step in development appears to be incorporation of higher mean effective pressures; analysis is also made of relative influence of maintenance costs, engine price, cylinder oil consumption, fuel consumption, prices of fuels of different viscosities, and propulsion efficiency on total cost.
