Discussion touches on areas of main propulsion machinery plants of primary interest to those who own and operate ships; description of Fairbanks Morse Model 38A20 diesel engine is given; typical installation for single screw vessel powered by two engines, each rated 12,000 bhp at 400 rpm, is illustrated and background material on initial cost, maintainability, reliability, and operating cost has been included; feasibility of utilizing medium-speed diesel engines for propulsion of ships in 10,000 to 20,000 shp class is also discussed.
