Propulsion unit of 17 in. diam was developed by CARDE, Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment for high altitude research vehicle; "CARDEPLEX" propellant used in motor is aluminized ammonium perchlorate/polyurethane formulation; axial combustion instability was factor which dictated pace of motor development; experimental investigations led to method of tailoring propellant compositions to obtain optimum combustion stability characteristics at prescribed burning rates; method was used in selection of propellant for 23KS20000 motor.
