Sea floor can be divided into beaches, continental shelves, slopes and deep-sea floor -- each with prospects for mining; continental shelves present greatest possibilities for new commercial harvesting of minerals which are classified as consolidated and unconsolidated deposits; methods for ocean-mineral exploration are reviewed and concept for future offshore mining system is outlined which is based on self-propelled bottom-mining machine.
