Development of electric drive systems at U S Army Materiel Command's Engineer Research and Development Laboratories, is based on use of gas turbines as prime mover; system under test is ballastable tractor consisting of direct connected turbine-generator operating at 39,000 rpm and developing 200 kw at 3200 cps; high frequency output power is connected to four static power converters and in turn to induction motor in each of vehicles four wheels; use of 40 kw fuel cell power plant which operates on hydrazine-hydrate and air as fuel as prime propulsion power for electric drive system in 3/4 ton test vehicle and other approaches are reported.
