Determining rocket thrust programs that use least amount of fuel to propel given mass in vertical plane from one point to another without aerodynamic lift, where gravitational force and aerodynamic drag are known as functions of altitude and speed; problem solved by formlating it as A. MAYER'S problem in calculus of variations; sample problems for short range ground-to-air rocket worked out.
