First example of new "handy-sized" Doxford engine has completed short trials in works at Sunderland and is being installed in 14,450 ton dw Liberty replacement ship Sheaf Crest; Doxford's have designed 58J4 engine, smallest in current J series with class of ship particularly in mind, but it will offer advantages where small and light direct-coupled engine is required; it is to be built only in 4-cyl form; weight is 170 tons; sections through 58J4 engine show changes from established J design.
