Growth of commercial helicopter companies from their first pioneering efforts in 1945 to present time is surveyed and slow progress made initially assessed; at present time there are 29 companies in world (outside Soviet Union and Red China) operating helicopter fleets numbering between 10 and 19 helicopters, and eight companies operating helicopter fleets numbering between 20 and 40, while there are only three companies (Bristow Helicopters Ltd, Okanagan Helicopters Inc, Petroleum Helicopters Inc), which have fleets of more than 50 machines; history of Bristow Helicopters Ltd, operating bases, helicopter accidents, maintenance requirements, and recommendations made for starting commercial helicopter operations.
