Some problems associated with helicopter rotor aerodynamics are reviewed; it is argued that great variety of " compound" VTOL aircraft has arisen because basic research needed to improve helicopter rotor has not been done and that aerodynamicists must adopt new outlook when dealing with rotors because traditional methods of attack are not valid.
