Special problems in connection with construction of long dual vehicular tunnels at elevation of 11,000 ft are discussed from point of view of decrease of human tolerance to carbon monoxide and increase of carbon monoxide emission at high altitudes; multiple vehicle emission tests at various grades, speeds and altitudes on single engine under rigorously controlled laboratory conditions were conducted and data obtained were used to arrive at criteria to be used in design of tunnels.
