It was found that 67% of all motorists traveling 18 mi section of I90 near Rapid City, SD, in Pennington and Mead Counties were using their low beams when first sighted; traffic volume increase of 2.3 times showed only 5% increase in low beam use; 66% of all motor vehicles who were on high beam when first sighted did not lower their headlights for patrol vehicle; about 2% of all vehicles on low beam when first sighted changed to high beam at moment of relative coincidence; slight upward trend was indicated in use of low headlight beams as weather conditions varied from clear skies to periods of precipitation.
