Aircraft structural design philosophies are considered as they affect non-destructive testing (NDT); principles of safe life and fail safe structures as applied to aircraft are discussed separately as they affect NDT differently; types of NDT used comprise X-ray, ultrasonics, electro-magnetic examination, eddy current, anodic oxidation, dye penetrant flaw detection, and other NDT aids; main use of NDT in service is to find cracks (and then measure crack propagation) and other signs of static or fatigue failure together with ascertaining onset of corrosion; examples of typical applications.
