Paper considers goal of rapid city-center-to-city-center transportation; constraints on such operation which call for progressive helicopter development to handle air transportation within Western Europe; short-haul zones in Northwest Europe are shown in map and compared with those of United States Eastern seaboard showing that Northwest Europe contains roughly twice population within same radius of 300 mi (that is, centered on New York and Brussels, respectively); possibilities of STOL aircraft are also explored which, however, introduce need for larger port; compound helicopter thus has within its capabilities good profit-earning ability on European international routes.
