Relatively unregulated operations of California intrastate airlines, between 1946 and 1965, provide evidence regarding effects of competition on air transportation performance; comparison of their development with that of highly regulated United States trunk and local service airlines indicates that greater competition yields significant differences in entry and exit, price level and structure, adoption of aircraft innovation, and intensity of aircraft utilization.
