Control system based on understanding of how traffic behaves and interacts with tunnel itself has improved traffic flow in peak periods in Hudson River tunnels by reducing back-ups and delays at tunnel entrance and heavy concentrations of vehicles inside tunnel, eliminating shock waves emanating from bottlenecks and consequent stop-and-go driving and reduced rates of flow, increasing speeds, reducing rates of breakdowns, accidents and emission of exhaust fumes.
