NASA topside sounder program is reviewed with emphasis on fixed-frequency topside sounder satellite, S-48; rocket test conducted established feasibility of topside sounding technique; design of S-48 satellite is compared with that of Alouette; comparison reveals complementary features of their scientific objectives and basic differences in technology used to accomplish objectives; differences in approach resulted in development of separate data analysis techniques.
