Reversing usual practice of building up rail ends, Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad was confronted with situation that made it necessary to grind down ends of 50 mi of rail that had been heat treated in 1931; investigations that preceded work and methods employed described, as are methods employed in eliminating differences in height of cropped, released rail laid in secondary service.
