General trend in development of metals for airplane is given with estimation of present direction and future tendencies; various steels, aluminum alloys, and very light alloys such as those based on magnesium are considered in regard to strength-weight ratio, stiffness, resistance to fatigue, to wear, and to corrosion, strength at high temperatures, and ease of working.
