Part of studies of lunar roving vehicle carried out by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp, centered upon light weight, small, highly mobile traction device, termed elliptical wheel, development of which is supported by U S Army Land Locomotion Laboratory; approach taken by Grumman, of canting two opposing hub disks to provide desired spoke geometry, promised to allow for simple design; results of tests are presented together with design details of wheel which has 3/16 in. thick 6061-T6 aluminum rim with predicted fatigue life equivalent to 20,000 mi; spokes are 1/4-in. diam rods, pretensioned to approximately 500 lb.
