Paper describes vehicle performance trials using Comet and Churchill tank; it was possible to check sinkage theory on soft clay and peat deposits in northwest Germany carried out in 1953 to obtain experimental data of rolling resistance at various speeds, sinkage and maximum drawbar pull, and to develop sinkage theory into more general theory from which forces of propulsion and resistance to motion of tracked vehicles on soft ground could be calculated in terms of vehicle and soil characteristics.
