Objectives of research submersible program under development by Lockheed Missiles and Space Co are to develop methods of exploration of ocean bottom for mineral deposits and to develop tools (such as corers) to collect samples; Deep Quest, in its modular payload compartment, can be outfitted to take cores up to 8 ft from ocean bottom and collect and store individual samples; vehicle has endurance of 24 hr at 2 knots and 12 hr at 4 knots; vehicle has 39 ft 10 in. oa length; beam is 16 ft and maximum width 19 ft; other data and design considerations are given.
