In developing two new engines for use in John Deere-Lanz tractors at Mannheim, West Germany, and in John Deere Dubuque Works crawler tractors, requirement for interchangeability of parts made it necessary that metric system standards and English system be considered; paper describes development of acceptable uniform practice to serve as guide in design and preparation of drawings; reference to "metric units" and "English units" encompasses not only millimeter-inch units, but differing practices in drawing angle of projection, symbols, terminology, tolerance specifications and drafting practices.
