Development of Berlin subway is described and schematically illustrated from 70 yr ago up to today; importance of this underground railway as means of communication, mainly destined for business traffic, is pointed out; however, capacity of this communication network will only satisfy requirements of so-called economy traffic and not of peak traffic; open method for constructing is discussed, that is most suitable for soil condition in Berlin; section approximately 300 m long is now under construction using shield tunneling.
